Elephant Dung

The ultimate in eco friendly handmade paper. The process is a little different to the Khadda and Lokta Paper.

The biggest difference is the elephants do the fibre pulping! The dung is collected and boiled, which sterilises it, before being made into paper. The coarseness and colour of the paper is entirely dependent on the diet of the elephant making each sheet unique.

The paper is sourced from the Maximus Elephant conservation trust that have their workshop in the grounds of the Millennium Elephant Foundation (MEF) in Sri Lanka.  The MEF is a small charity that cares for sick, old and disabled elephants. MEF have mobile vetenary units that travel the country dedicated to alleviating the plight of the Sri Lankan elephant.

As the human population of Sri Lanka grows and tourism increases the natural habitat of the elephant decreases. This forces the elephants to eat farmer's crops resulting in conflict between elephants and humans that without the continue work of the MEF and Maximus only humans will win.
